"We have a new CEO who was a bit concerned that the average age of the workforce here is about 47," he explained. "We are now trying to take on young people across the site. We took on these two engineering apprentices and in January we aim to take two on the the production side."

"I have 12 technicians working for me, four or five of whom will be retiring in the next 10 years so we have to have a programme of replacement."

"We took on Matthew and Robert knowing they had had a year with HETA and would have the discipline and experience of the working environment. That is a big advantage. HETA teaches more than just skills, they teach them what the employer wants."

"We're very pleased with both of them. HETA will be monitoring their progress until they are finally qualified and give us a lot of support."

Both apprentices are studying for their Foundation Degrees. "We knew this would be the case and we're keen to support them," Mr. Shackleton said. "We hope they will continue and do a full honours degree in an engineering discipline. We really like that idea."
