SMart Futures

In 2010, HETA agreed a contract with SMart Wind to deliver the SMart Futures competition, an educational project related to a major wind farm development off the east coast.
HETA is running SMart Futures through its STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) team and will eventually be delivering it to over 50 secondary schools throughout the Humber region
Over the course of the 4 year project, each year will have a competition and the winners of each year get the unique opportunity to come up with a name for a block of development that will make up the Hornsea Zone offshore wind farm.
Through a series of informative presentations and competitions with prizes, the project aspires to raise awareness of STEM subjects as a route to long-term jobs and career progression within the wind energy industry.
The first year of the SMart Futures project consisted of a schools activity based around construction and operation of wind turbines. The next step was the competition element where schools put forward their proposals of where they would place a Turbine construction site in the Humber region. The winners of this entered the final which gives them the chance to put forward a name for a prospective block in the Hornsea Zone.

"Just wanted to say a massive thank you to you and your staff for yesterday. I mean this sincerely when I say it was the best technical engineering event I have ever been to. It was set at the right level, students needed minimal intervention, the learning through doing and development through data analysis was a revelation to me. I did an evaluation by speaking to them this morning, and they all said how brilliant it was. With your permission I was hoping that we could share good practice, and you would send me a kit list of what they used or I will buy your kit from you when you've finished so I can repeat it with other groups at the Academy. Thanks again Mike" Paul Fairlie, Assistant Principal, Oasis Academy Immingham
