STEM In Action
STEM In Action is an annual event organised by Niki Bardsley at HETA which is designed to fire the imagination of Key Stage 2 students (aged 7-10) in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths subjects.
The event is a huge success and that is illustrated by the number of schools and companies interested in taking part. In 2010, over 500 pupils from 30 schools across the Humber region attended the 2 day event.
Volunteers from 14 local companies provide 40 minute interactive activities designed to engage the pupils and develop their understanding and imagination - with the emphasis on fun! These sessions were repeated 5 times each day and each group of 20 pupils attended five of the activities throughout the day.
Organisations and activities included in 2010 included;
- RAF - Landing a helicopter using electrical circuits
- Kingston Communications - How the internet works
- BAE Systems - Building a plane
- T Q Catalis - Electro-magnetics using railway signals
- HM Coastguard - Beach and coastal safety
- HETA - Build a rocket
- East Riding of Yorkshire Council - Waste recycling
- Crown Paints - How paint is made
