Update 18.03.2021

We are now into the second week of welcoming learners back in to the HETA training centres and the effort everyone is making to abide by the Covid-19 rules we have in place has been very pleasing to witness. The learners are doing exceptionally well to adjust to what we are asking of them and I am sure you will agree having them on site performing practical workshop training is vital to the progression of their apprenticeships, unlike schools and colleges we cannot rely on pure theory. The key to success at HETA is the quality of workshop training that the learners receive and due to the lockdown restrictions, it is imperative that as much practical training can take place as possible in readiness for the end of year switch into an industrial environment.

To ensure clarity on the process we will use for further cases it will be outlined below:

  • Notification of a positive COVID test must be reported to us as soon as possible by emailing covidreporting@heta.co.uk
  • HETA will then contact the learner who has tested positive and start the process of a risk assessment to identify close contacts. The definition to identify a close contact will be “Being within 1 metre of someone indoors who has tested positive without a face covering being worn or being within 2 metres of someone indoors who has tested positive, for a period longer than 15 minutes, without a face covering being worn.” The control measure of mandatory face coverings in all areas gives us a very realistic chance to limit this, providing all rules around the wearing of facemasks and social distancing are followed.
  • Anyone who meets the criteria of being a close contact from the risk assessment undertaken will the contacted and advised that they must start a period of self-isolation. The specifics on dates will be discussed at the time but no exceptions will be made in accepting a learner back to site earlier.
  • If the positive case becomes apparent whilst learners are on site we will ask the group to leave site promptly but safely, if we are made aware of a positive case out of working hours we will endeavor to communicate the best we can to avoid any unnecessarily attendance the following morning.
  • Within the first 24hours of being informed of a positive case we ask that all learners who are not showing symptoms to book a lateral flow test on that same day at a local asymptomatic community testing centre or self administer an approved NHS lateral flow test.
  • We then ask that a second lateral flow test is booked at a local asymptomatic community testing centre or self administer an approved NHS lateral flow test giving one clear day from the first test.
  • Once two negative lateral flow tests have taken place we are happy to welcome the learner back into the training centre. Which will be 72 hours after notification of the positive case.
  • Example:
    • Notification of a positive case is communicated on Monday Evening
    • Tuesday the first lateral flow test must be taken
    • Thursday the second lateral flow test must be taken.
    • Two negative results means a return to the training centre on Friday.

Please note:

  • If any of the lateral flow tests taken return positive, the learner must book a PCR test through the NHS and follow the guidance given on self-isolation.
  • If symptoms develop then isolation must begin and a PCR test must be booked through the NHS, relevant guidance given afterwards must be followed.
  • If the learner is advised to isolated by Test and Trace then we will not accept them back to site until it is complete.

I trust that you everyone will find the process above robust and a replication of the key sectors of Engineering and Manufacturing whilst also giving learners the best possible chance to succeed within their first year training. We are continuously review the guidance given to us by the DfE and PHE and at this moment feel we have a solution which will be appreciated by learners, parents and employers. Any changes to the process from guidance given will be communicated promptly.

Update 24/02/2021

We are pleased to inform that following the latest government guidance HETA will be opening its doors to commence Adult course training on Monday 1st March and student training on Monday 8th March.

Normal working hours of 08:00 – 16:00 will resume and upon arrival all persons must wear a face covering. The slight change to the guidance issued by the government is that face coverings must be worn in classrooms along with all other communal areas of the training centre. This requirement will stay in place until Easter and is aligned with all other education establishments, however it is subject to review following government advice.

The wearing of a face coverings within the workshop during practical training will be dependent on the activities being undertaken and the number of persons within the area. If social distancing cannot be maintained because of these reasons then the wearing of a face covering will be enforced. We get a level of flexibility within the workshops due to the expanse of space and being able to spread people out, alongside the added benefit of allowing a flow of fresh air by raising the roller doors.

All persons on site will be required to have their temperature taken twice daily as a control measure and everybody is expected to show compliance to other local Covid-19 rules in place at ll times.

HETA must also stress the importance of looking out for the three main symptoms:

  • A high temperature
  • A new, continuous cough
  • A loss or change to your sense of smell or taste

If you develop any of the above or tests positive then you must not attend the training centre, likewise if any family member of their household develops any of the symptoms or tests positive, you must not attend the centre. In any of these occurrences we ask that the absence is reported in the usual way by contacting the HETA reception by telephone, making it clear that the absence is Covid related.

All the control measures are under a rolling review.

Update 18/05/2020

We have been following government guidelines on the closure of the HETA centres. The safety of our learners and staff is paramount to us - hence the decision to close the training centres in March.

However, as restrictions will ease in the upcoming weeks, we are now looking at plans to resume some level of practical training for our learners to continue with their training and education.

HETA need to make sure our learners get the practical training they require in order to complete their programme of study and to progress with their qualifications and so in our return to work, we will be following the lead of industry as well as the education sector.

On this basis, we are looking at a return date of 1st June 2020 for learners to resume some level of practical training. Theory lessons will continue to be delivered at home. We will continue to monitor the situation closely and should this date need to be changed based on guidance from the government we will update the website and social media.

In order for us to safely return to work and for learners to come into the centre for practical training we have put the following measures in place:

  • Theory lessons will continue at home (They will only come in for practical training)
  • Learners will only be in for a maximum of two days per week
  • Only half of the learners will be on site at a time to reduce numbers down to manageable levels
  • Designated areas have been set up to reduce and avoid contact with other learners/staff
  • Hand wash and sanitising stations have been set up in the training centres
  • Maximum occupancy limits in rooms will be enforced
  • A 'one-way' system has been put into place
  • Areas have all been signed and cautioned (i.e Keep to the left, No Entry)
  • A robust Social Distancing policy for learners and staff to be adhered to at all times
  • A set of risk assessments have been created
  • PPE stock (i.e gloves, masks) has been bought for the use of both staff and learners

From 1st June 2020, training courses will also be able to proceed, however we will have strict safety measures in place like above to ensure we adhere to social distancing at all times. One of the restrictions will be reduced numbers on each course for the foreseeable future.

Our Higher National programmes will continue remotely.
