After working in administration at an insurance company for almost ten years, Katie decided on a career change. Following a recommendation from her brother, Katie put in an application three hours before the HETA application deadline to kick start her career in engineering.
“I have a range of experience with practical work, and I just loved it. I have been involved in building churches and homes and just thought that engineering would be an interesting career to progress into,” says Katie.
“Once my application was accepted, I did everything I could to find an employer and attended all of HETA company open days. I was very grateful to be invited to Karro Food Group for an interview and it was great.”
“My time at HETA has been amazing. As much as Maths blows my mind, it is a fantastic programme. It doesn’t matter how much knowledge you have; everyone is on the same playing field and the instructors are great at taking you back to basics. Everyone is so lovely.”
Human Resources Business Partner at Karro Food Group, Lauren Dineley commented, “Katie grabbed our attention straight away at the Virtual Company Open Day. She was asking all the questions, so it was great to see her again at our interview stage. After only a month with HETA, it is great to see her develop in her training. Katie will be a great advocate to encourage women into engineering careers.”
Several members of HETA staff nominated Katie as September's “Learner of the Month”.
Mechanical Instructor, Sean Edwards says “Katie was nominated by her peers for the award and many of the group saying how she has helped them so far.
She is a great team worker, and she is more than willing to put in extra effort outside of HETA to help her develop and learn. I’ve been very impressed by her so far and the way she conducts herself at HETA.”
“The group has been a great support,” says Katie, “I get on really well with everyone. The age range varies so much here, and everyone's maturity and intelligence levels are outstanding.”
