Apprenticeship Standards

Funding

A range of government support is available to organisations who are looking to recruit an apprentice, or even upskill their existing workforce.

Incentive payment for hiring a new apprentice

Due to COVID-19, the government’s Plan for Jobs will help to kickstart the nation’s economic recovery. In recognition of the value apprentices can bring to our economy, an incentive payment will be made to employers who hire an apprentice between 1 August 2020 and 31 January 2021.

The government will introduce a new payment of £2,000 to employers in England for each apprentice they hire aged under 25, and a £1,500 payment for each apprentice they hire aged 25 and over. These payments will be in addition to the existing £1,000 payment the government already provides for 16-18 year-old apprentices which is explained below. This means you could receive up to £3000 to employ an apprentice.

You can only apply for this payment for NEW apprentices who started their contract of employment between 1 August 2020 and 31 January 2021.

In summary, if you are looking to take on an apprentice:

  • The minimum wage for an apprentice is £4.15 per hour
  • Employer incentives - £3000 per 16-18yr, £2000 per 19-24yr and £1500 per 25+yr
  • Excellent funding opportunities available
  • No recruitment fees

You can apply for the payment from 1 September 2020, after you add new apprentices to your apprenticeship service account

Levy Paying Organisations

Levy paying organisations are those who have a salary bill(pay wages in excess) of £3million. These employers have to contribute 0.5% of their annual salary bill into their apprenticeship levy account. The apprenticeship levy can then be use to upskill/re-skill your existing workforce as well as recruiting new apprentices. We can work with you to ensure that you get most out of your levy contributions. Make sure you use your levy as these funds expire after 24 months!

We can also help support you should you not have enough funds in your levy account and explain your contributions.

Non-Levy Paying Organisations

If you have less then 50 employees, your are entitled to fully funded training for 16-18 year old applicants. A £1000 cash incentive is also available when you recruit an apprentice. This can be used alongside the government incentive above.

If you have less than 50 employees, but take on an apprentices 19+, employers will have to contribute 5% of their total training costs in quarterly payments over the first year of the apprenticeships training.

If you have more than 50 employees and a salary bill(pay wages in excess) of less than £3million, employers have to contribute 5% of their total training costs in quarterly payments over the first year of the apprenticeships training. The £1000 cash incentive is also available when you recruit an apprentice aged 16-18.
