Making decisions about future careers can feel overwhelming. There are lots of options, lots of information, and it’s not always clear where to start.
That’s why we’ve put together these frequently asked questions. They’re designed to help young people and their parents or carers better understand engineering pathways, what support is available, and what the next steps might look like.
You don’t need to have everything figured out yet. These FAQs are here to offer clarity, reassurance, and guidance as you explore the options.
The UK needs engineers. They design, build, maintain, and improve the systems we rely on every day — from the food we eat and the energy we use, to transport, manufacturing, and technology.
The Humber region is a major hub for engineering activity. It is home to some of the largest employers in the country, particularly across food and drink production, manufacturing, and energy and renewables.
Choosing engineering means developing skills that are needed locally, nationally, and for the future.
An engineering apprenticeship allows learners to earn while they learn, combining practical workplace experience with structured training.
Apprenticeships can offer a route all the way through to higher and degree-level qualifications, without the typical student tuition fees. Learners also gain valuable work experience with an employer, building skills, confidence, and understanding of the industry as they progress.
Learners are supported by staff who understand engineering in the real world. All members of the teaching and training team have direct industry experience, and a number of them began their own careers through an apprenticeship.
This means learners are guided by people who understand both the technical skills and the realities of working in engineering. Alongside teaching, staff provide ongoing support with progress, confidence, and next steps. If someone struggles at any point, support is available and encouraged.
For our engineering pathways, we look for grade 5 or above in Maths, English, and Science.
If you’d like to find out more or ask questions about entry requirements, attending an Open Night is a great way to get further information and speak to the team.
With over 60 years of experience, HETA has supported generations of apprentices into sustainable employment in engineering.
Many former apprentices have gone on to build long-term careers across the industry. Some now hold senior or leadership positions, while others work on engineering projects across the UK and around the world. Each journey is different, but the foundation built through an apprenticeship can open doors to a wide range of opportunities.
Learner safety and wellbeing are taken seriously. Trained staff, clear safeguarding processes, and a supportive environment help learners feel safe, respected, and able to focus on learning.
Parents and carers can feel reassured that wellbeing is a priority.
