Safe Use of Milling & Turning Machines

Course overview

Gain the practical skills and confidence to safely operate conventional milling and turning machines in the workplace. This intensive two-day course is designed for employees who use, or are required to use, manual machine tools as part of their role. Through hands-on workshop activities, delegates will develop safe working practices while learning the fundamental techniques needed to produce components accurately and efficiently.

Course details

Course Objectives

Section 1 – Milling Machines

Delegates will learn how to:

  • Safely operate a conventional milling machine.
  • Set up and correctly secure a vice.
  • Inspect and check the milling head prior to operation.
  • Understand cutting speeds and feed rates.
  • Identify and correctly use a range of milling cutters and tooling.
  • Perform a variety of milling techniques to produce accurate components.

Assessment:
Manufacture a component to a given specification.

Section 2 – Turning Machines

Delegates will learn how to:

  • Safely operate a conventional centre lathe.
  • Set up and correctly secure a chuck.
  • Carry out pre-use checks on the machine.
  • Understand cutting speeds and feed rates.
  • Identify and correctly use a range of turning tools.
  • Perform a variety of turning techniques to produce accurate components.

Assessment:
Manufacture a component to a given specification.
